This project focuses on addressing the
programmatic needs of the campus and
the public through transformations of
the ground. There are four zones of the
project that explore this transformation
in groundwork (the plaza, the outdoor
reading space, the outdoor café/lecture
space, and the secondary entrance area).
Each of the zones responds to a specific
circulation path on the site. Elements
like the ramp connecting the plaza and
reading space bridge each of these
zones, creating unique experiences that
are scattered but connected throughout
the site.
The library building sits at the center
of all these zones. The middle strip of
the library acts as a promenade that
reinforces the axis of the campus. Public
spaces and stacks are divided between
the ground floor and lower floor and are
joined with a double height lobby space
The lower floor shares a
similar language with the groundwork of
the outdoor reading space. At moments
the walls of the lower floor extend to the
ground floor. At each of these extensions,
there is a slight cut in the floor plate,
allowing light to pass through and
illuminate parts of the lower floor. As a
result, each volume of stacks has specific
spatial and lighting qualities.
